Onion (Allium cepa L.) is one of the most widely grown vegetable in Pakistan and a means to earn valuable foreign exchange for the country. Microbial spoilage of onion is a major cause resulting in post harvest loss every year. In the present study, gamma radiation treatment was used to reduce the pathogenic microflora of Allium cepa L. hence increasing post harvest storage life. The major exported onion variety of Punjab (Desi Red) was selected for the study. The onion bulbs were irradiated at the doses of 0.05, 0.10 and 0.15 kGy at PARAS Foods, Lahore. Then the comparison of microbial populations of onion was made between control and irradiated samples. The impact of radiation dose on weight loss and organoleptic qualities of onion was also evaluated. The results revealed that gamma irradiation significantly affected bioburden, weight loss and organoleptic properties. Onion bulbs irradiated at the dose of 0.15 kGy showed minimum weight loss, reduced microbial load and preservation of organoleptic qualities of onions.

Allah Ditta Sumaira, Dr. Mehwish Iqtedar Dr. Shagufta Naz Preservation of Dry Dates by cobalt-60 Gamma Radiation proximate analysis of gamma irradiated and non irradiated chickpea
The present work was carried out to improve the quality and shelflife of local dry date fruit variety of Pakistan, Aseel by using different gamma irradiation doses and to examine the effect of gamma irradiation treatment on infestation and microbial load. Dry dates were found to be contaminated with aerobic mesophilic bacteria, yeast and molds. Different fungal species and E.coli were detected in irradiated and control samples. When different gamma radiation doses were applied, complete inhibition of insect growth for upto 6 months was achievable however microbial growth was not reduced to acceptable level which can be lowered by prior physico-chemical treatment.

Ionizing radiation in interaction with living cells causes a variety of changes depending on type of exposure, absorbed dose, duration of exposure, interval after exposure and also susceptibility of tissues.Taking into account that BM-derived cells are responsible of maintaining, generating, and replacing differentiated cells as a consequence of physiological cell turnover or tissue damage due to injury.

This book reviews factors that contribute to the photodegradation and free radical oxidation of materials. Photo-induced chemiluminescence (PICL) was used as the main analytical technique to study materials degradation by measuring free radical populations from irradiated samples. Samples were subjected to accelerated degradation conditions prior to the PICL measurement to assess the level of degradation.

Quality analysis such as physical purity test,physiological quality test and health quality analysis are mechanisms to measure the quality standard of seed from any sources. The out come of the work is helpful for Agricultural researchers, Agricultural University professionals, Agricultural students, private and public seed companies, seed marketing institutions and farmers.
